World Water Day: Help Us Make A Difference

by Alex Kalbli of Marley Coffee

Access to clean water is a necessity that is denied to a vast portion of the world’s population. In fact, the water crisis is the number one global risk based on impact to society (as a measure of devastation), as announced by the World Economic Forum in January 2015. Here are some more facts provided by water.org that illuminate the reality of water issues worldwide:

  • 1 in 10 (663 million) people lack access to safe water. That’s twice the population of the United States.
  • 1 in 3 (2.4 billion) people lack access to a toilet. Today more people have a mobile phone than a toilet.

Each year on March 22, World Water Day brings attention to these issues and serves as an opportunity to inform, engage, and inspire action around water issues worldwide. This year’s theme is the power of water and jobs to transform people’s lives.

Water is essential to bringing coffee from bean to cup. Not only are water resources needed to grow the plant itself, water is used after harvesting in several stages: extracting the bean, fermentation, and washing. This process can pollute local water supplies, causing a damaging effect to the surrounding people and economy.

Marley Coffee is committed to improving the water quality in communities where we source coffee through our partnership with Water Wise Coffee™. Water Wise creates sustainable solutions to water issues around coffee production and improves the lives, ecology, and economies of communities at origin. Water Wise is currently on the ground in the Sidama region of Ethiopia, working to clean all existing wet mills near the Kolla River. To date, Marley Coffee has raised $169,204 for Water Wise, converted more than 2,400 metric tons of coffee pulp into compost, and included 49 wet mills as part of the program that no longer discharge waste water or coffee pulp into the rivers.

For every recyclable EcoCup capsule sold, Marley Coffee donates 1 cent directly to Water Wise. Learn more, watch the Water Wise documentary and support Water Wise with your purchase of Marley Coffee. Additionally, Marley Coffee will donate $1 for every online order to Water Wise March 22-29. Every person can make a difference – let’s come together and make it work!
